If you live in Chicago, you probably know the feeling: you leave your apartment early, spend most of the day at work, meet friends for dinner, run errands, and suddenly it’s Sunday night and your apartment looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in weeks.
The good news? If you’re rarely home, you actually don’t need to spend your entire weekend cleaning.
My approach is simple: clean based on how you actually live, not how often you think you should clean.
Here’s the low-effort apartment cleaning routine I use to keep a Chicago apartment feeling fresh without spending hours with a vacuum and mop.
1. Start With the Entryway
Chicago weather makes the entryway one of the hardest-working areas in the apartment.
In winter, there’s road salt, slush and wet snow. In spring, there’s mud and rain. Even in summer, your shoes bring in plenty of Chicago street grime.
So I start my cleaning routine here.
Once a week, I:
- Shake out or vacuum the entry mat.
- Vacuum around the door and baseboards.
- Wipe down the floor, especially during snowy or rainy weather.
- Put away shoes that have accumulated during the week.
- Wipe down the area where bags, coats and keys tend to pile up.
A good doormat and a designated spot for wet or dirty shoes can make a surprisingly big difference.
2. Vacuum Less, But Vacuum Strategically
If you’re barely home, you probably don’t need to vacuum your entire apartment every few days.
Instead, focus on the places that actually collect dirt.
For me, that means:
- The entryway
- Kitchen floor
- Around the couch
- Under the dining table
- High-traffic areas
I usually do a quick vacuum once a week rather than trying to make the entire apartment spotless every time.
If you have pets, roommates or a lot of foot traffic, you may need to do this more often. But for someone who spends most of the day away from home, a targeted vacuum is usually enough. For total home refreshes, you can also explore options like apartment and condo cleaning services.
3. Give the Kitchen a 10-Minute Reset
The kitchen is the one area I don’t like letting get out of control.
Not because it needs to look perfect, but because a small mess can turn into a gross mess surprisingly quickly.
My weekly kitchen reset is:
- Clear the counters.
- Put away anything that doesn’t belong.
- Wipe down the counters.
- Clean the stovetop.
- Wipe the microwave if needed.
- Clean the sink.
- Take out the trash.
- Quickly mop the kitchen floor.
If you live in a smaller Chicago apartment, this can take less than 10–15 minutes.
The biggest trick is not leaving food or dirty dishes sitting around while you’re gone for the weekend. Coming home to a clean kitchen is one of those little things that makes your apartment feel instantly better.
4. Don’t Forget the Bathroom
Your bathroom doesn’t need a full deep clean every week if you’re barely using it.
Once a week, I focus on the basics:
- Clean the toilet.
- Wipe down the sink and counter.
- Clean the mirror.
- Wipe the shower or tub.
- Empty the trash.
- Quickly mop the floor.
Then, every few weeks, I’ll do the less exciting jobs like cleaning around the base of the toilet, scrubbing grout and wiping down cabinet fronts.
The goal isn’t to make your bathroom look like a hotel every weekend. It’s to prevent small messes from becoming projects.
5. Change Your Sheets on a Schedule
This is one task that’s easy to ignore when you’re barely home.
But even if you’re only sleeping in your apartment a few nights a week, your sheets still collect sweat, skin cells, dust and everything else that comes with normal use.
I aim to change my sheets about every 1–2 weeks, depending on how much I’ve actually been home.
While the sheets are in the wash, I use those few minutes to:
- Dust the nightstands.
- Clear clutter from the bedroom.
- Vacuum around the bed.
- Put away clothes that have migrated onto a chair.
It’s an easy way to make the bedroom feel completely reset without spending much time there.
6. Deal With Chicago Dust
One thing about apartment living is that dust has a way of appearing even when you’re hardly home.
I don’t try to dust every surface every week.
Instead, I rotate through the apartment.
One week I’ll wipe down shelves and furniture. Another week I’ll focus on windowsills, baseboards and harder-to-reach areas.
If your apartment has radiators, vents or forced-air heating, give those areas some attention too. They can collect a surprising amount of dust over time.
7. Make a “When I Get Home” Rule
My biggest cleaning hack isn’t really cleaning.
It’s having a few tiny rules that stop clutter from building up.
When I get home:
- Shoes come off immediately.
- Mail gets dealt with immediately.
- Clothes either go into the closet, hamper or back onto a hanger.
- Bags go in their designated spot.
None of these tasks takes more than a minute or two.
But when you repeat them every day, your apartment doesn’t develop that “I’ve been away for five days and everything is everywhere” feeling.
8. Do a 30-Minute Sunday Reset
I don’t dedicate an entire Sunday to cleaning.
I set a timer for about 30 minutes and move quickly.
- Minutes 1–5: Declutter
Put away clothes, dishes, mail, bags and anything else that’s out of place. - Minutes 5–15: Kitchen + bathroom
Wipe down the kitchen and bathroom and take out the trash. - Minutes 15–25: Floors
Vacuum the high-traffic areas and mop where necessary. - Minutes 25–30: Bedroom + finishing touches
Change the sheets if it’s time, wipe down surfaces and put everything back where it belongs.
Then stop.
The apartment doesn’t have to be perfect.
9. Do a Seasonal Chicago Deep Clean
Instead of trying to deep-clean your apartment every weekend, I save the bigger jobs for seasonal resets.
Winter
Focus on salt residue, entryway floors, coats, boots and areas around radiators.
Spring
This is when I tackle windows, windowsills, baseboards, closets and the dust that has accumulated during heating season. For extensive transitions, consider scheduling move-in move-out cleaning support.
Summer
Clean fans, screens, balcony or patio areas, and general surfaces to keep things airy.
Fall
Prepare heating units, check entryway mats, and get your space ready for indoor living again.
